Stellar’s Jays are part of the Corvidae family of birds, which include crows, ravens, jays, nutcrackers, and magpies. Stellar’s blue bodies, crested dark heads, and bright blue patterned wings, they are the only jay with a crest. The inland form have white stripes near the forehead and eye. They are loud and distinct with their voices, they are amazing imitators of squirrels, dogs, and mechanical objects. They can be found in coniferous forests and coastal areas. Here is one in a wooded area in northern Arizona.

Great picture of this wonderful bird. I also never knew they had any white at all – always thought they were blue and blackish.

I didn’t know that the inland Stellar’s Jays were the only ones with the white facial stripes. Very interesting. Thanks.
