Pinyon Jays are found in arid pinyon-juniper forest areas, as well as yellow pine wood areas in the western U.S. Their distinct markings are a short tail, spiked bill, and blue all over. They are very social birds, rarely seen solo. They feed on mostly pinyon pine seeds. Here is one of many I saw while in a pinyon-juniper forest area in northern Arizona.

I love the entire jay family, but Pinyon jays are so cool.
