SOUTHERN DOGFACE BUTTERFLY

Here is a Southern Dogface Butterfly. They are found in North and South America. Abundant in California, they are the state insect. The wings are yellow with black borders, and a black eyespot on underside. The name derives from upper side of pointed forewings have a dogface pattern. They get nectar from various flowers, especially those with purple color. Here is one in northern Arizona.
