Red Squirrels are rust-red to grayish-red above and whitish to gray below. Their tails are dark rust-red. They are found near any type of forest with pines in much of Canada and the U.S. in northern mid and eastern states, as well as the Allegheny Mountains and Rocky Mountains. Red Squirrels are active all year except for very inclement weather. They feed on pine seeds. They will bury them individually or in large caches in the damp ground, hollow trees, or tree bases. I saw many Red Squirrels running around, chasing each other, and climbing trees while I was in northern Minnesota recently.
