Purple finches are large and chunky forest birds with sturdy conical beaks. They are really not purple, but a rose colored finch. They are found throughout much of Canada, the eastern United States, and the coastal western United States. They live in mixed forest areas, along wooded streams.

I think Purple Finches are found in Colorado, but I have no idea how to tell them from the more common House Finch. Any suggestions?
