Bufflehead’s are smaller ducks with distinguishing white parts on their heads. The males have a large, white patch around back of head to cheeks, while the females have a white cheek spot. They are diving ducks, found in water areas such as lakes, ponds, or rivers. They eat insects, crustaceans, and plant life. Their range is where Northern Flickers are found, as they use their old nests for nesting cavities and breeding grounds.

Tracy,
I am used to seeing these ducks in Maine, but I am sure I have also seen them on the river here in new Mexico… if not what else could they be?

I see them in northern AZ in winter months, so I’m sure you are in their range, as well. They are beautiful.
