Monument Valley is located on the Arizona/Utah border. The Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park has large sandstone buttes that are famous from western movies. The West and East Mitten buttes or “The Mittens”, are the highest point in the park. The West being 6176 feet or 1882 meters in elevation, while the East is a little higher at 6226 feet or 1898 meters. The layers are organ rock shale on the bottom, deChelly sandstone in the middle, and Moenkopi Formation the top, capped by Shinarump Conglomerate.
This is an old photo that I took back in 2001 at sunset.

Spectacular place. When my girlfriend and I went to Monument valley we could hardly drive two minutes without wanting to pull over and take more pictures.
