I was walking around in a northern Arizona Pinyon-Juniper woodland area and I ran across this Black-tailed Jackrabbit. A jackrabbit is a actually a hare and this particular species is found in the Western United States and Mexico. They hop and run, hopping five to ten feet at a time. While moving, they can leap up to 20 feet while running up to 40 miles per hour over a short distance.

I had these up in the hills but down here by the river we have the little cottontails… I love them all!

It’s always a surprise when one of these jacks erupts near me — they blend into the desert so well. Great shot, Tracy.
