Western Screech Owls are tiny owls, about 8 1/2 inches/22 centimeters tall. They are barred gray in color with yellow eyes. These owls are found throughout western North America in various habitats. They eat snakes and reptiles. I saw this Western Screech Owl a while back, his name is Smokey and he belongs to Arizona’s Raptor Experience.

What a tiny little fellow! Never seen one before but they are definitely on my list. I wasn’t even sure if I’d heard one so I checked the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. There I discovered there are 2 species of screech owls — Western (including Arizona) and Eastern. The Eastern has the most distinctive sound — you can hear both on this website. https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Western_Screech-Owl/id
