Coyotes are found throughout much of the U.S. and Canada. Their colors are mottled gray and orange above, white below. They lave long legs and bushy tails with a black tip. Coyotes are solitary hunters that eat small mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians. In winter months, they will eat carrion from larger animals. They can run at speeds up to 40 MPH and and can leap 14 feet, they are known for traveling great distances, as well. I came across this coyote walking along the forest road in a Ponderosa Pine woodland area.

Have you seen any coy-wolves yet? We have them here in Maine and they have spread all the way to Mexico – They are bigger and carry their bushy tails high – they look more like wolves.
Last winter in New Mexico a coyote sauntered across my front yard one day! I loved his unhurried gait.

I have not seen coy-wolves yet. I think there are some in this area, as well. The coyote was definitely unhurried!

They are spreading west, so my guess is that you will see one before long. Think bigger animal, more upright posture and bush tail held high – the marking are otherwise geographically variable.

Right. The down tail is what made me verify this was a coyote. 🙂
