An American Avocet is a large wader found foraging in shallow fresh and salt water or mudflats. They are found throughout much of the western United States and Mexico, along with parts of Canada in the summer. They eat aquatic invertebrates and insects. American Avocets have a unique long dark upturned bill which they use in the water to catch their prey.

Hmm – I have yet to see this bird… wonder if it’s found in northern New Mexico?

I would think at some point because of migration.
