Chipmunks are woodland animals with cheek pouches that are fur-lined, which they use to carry their food. They hibernate with the cached eats consisting of nuts, seeds, fruit, and insects. They will awaken during hibernation to get some of the stored food, as they do not rely on stored body fat to survive, only for maintenance. They are generally daytime mammals that are usually found running around on the ground, although their nests may be underground or in a tree hollow.
Least chipmunks are very small, found in fields, pine forests, sagebrush desert areas, or rocky cliffs. In addition to nuts, seeds, fruits, and insects, they will also eat acorns, grasses, and fungi, which they store in logs or concealed burrows. They are active runners and skillful climbers. I found these least chipmunks in an open forest area with many dead logs. There were many of them, running and climbing on this sunny morning.
We used to see a lot of chipmunks while hiking in Alberta. Very cute and full of life! 🙂

Chipmunks are hard not to love … high on the Cute Scale. Also not the easiest models to photograph as they always seem to be on the move … good capture. 🙂
