Happy Superb Owl Sunday! Superb Owl Sunday is a day to celebrate owls. It happens to be on the same day as Super Bowl Sunday, a day for football lovers. There are over 150 different species in the world with about 19 in North America. Owls are birds of prey with binocular vision, their eyes are supported by bony sockets which means they cannot turn their eyes, but they can rotate their heads up to 270 degrees. They have asymmetrical ears and flat facial disks for keen hearing. They have large talons for tearing flesh. Their talons are zygodactyl, which means two toes point forward and two toes point backward. They can be found in woodland areas, deserts, or open field habitats and they eat small mammals, fish, insects, or small birds. I took pictures of these gorgeous owls at the Arboretum of Flagstaff.
