

An insect is defined as a small invertebrate animal with a well-defined head, thorax, and abdomen, three pairs of legs, compound eyes, one pair of antennae, and typically one or two pairs of wings. Types of these include flies, bees, mosquites, butterflies, dragonflies, grasshoppers, or beetles. There are some insects without wings, such as ants. Spiders are not considered insects. They are of the class arachnida, not insecta. Both insects and arachnids are under the phylum arthopoda. Insects probably have the largest population in any given habitat of the terrestrial animals. There are approximately 950,000 known species of insects in the world, which comes to about 10 quintillion individual insects.
