The Atlantic Ocean is the second largest of the world’s oceans. Its total area is just over 41 million square feet, covering 20% of the Earth’s surface and about 29% of Earth’s water surface. The Atlantic borders the Americas, Europe, and Africa. Its greatest depth is about 27,490 feet in the Puerto Rico Trench. It was named by the ancient Greeks after either Atlas the Titan for the Atlas Mountains. Atlas meaning: to hold up the sky.
A bay is a body of water connected to an ocean or lake formed by an indentation of the shoreline. A large bay may be called a gulf, a sea, or a sound. Chesapeake Bay in Virginia is an estuary lying inland from the Atlantic Ocean. Kiawah is a barrier or sea island on the Atlantic coast in South Carolina. Here are some pictures taken while I was in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia, at various times.
